In January of 2001, Daniel Bernhardt was cast in the Matrix Reloaded as the new bad guy "Agent Johnson", next to Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburn, directed by the Wachowski Brothers.
Training began right away in Los Angeles with Master Woo-Ping Yuen and his Stunt Team from Hong-Kong. The actors and stunt guys trained together as a team every day for about eight hours. It was tough but a lot fun. Next to our martial arts training we played a lot of Ping-Pong. My best battles I had with Keanu, who's an excellent player.
After three months of grueling training we all moved to Oakland, CA where we began shooting the FREEWAY CHASE. It was probably one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had on a movie set. I remember my first day of shooting. I came to the set and saw a guy, who kinda looked like me, standing on top of a car going 60 MPH. I said, wow that's awesome. The Wachowsky Brothers replied...cool...your next. So, my first shot on the Matrix Reloaded was of me getting out of the car going 35 MPH and climbing to the top of the roof. It was insane. I asked the Stunt Coordinator. What do I do if I fall? He said...don't, there are about five cars behind you. Did I mention I had no wires attached to me. I did it and it all went well. It was pretty spectacular.
The whole freeway chase scene took about three months to film. The fight scene between me and Morpheus on top of the 18 wheeler took about two weeks to shoot. Laurence and I worked long and hard rehearsing our fight scene. It was a pleasure working with him. It turned out to be a very cool fight between us. Later that year I flew to Sydney, Australia to shoot my opening scene with Keanu Reeves. Rehearsals continued for several weeks and then we shot the "Upgrade" fight scene with Keanu. It was a very cool fight. Keanu was great opponent. Of course we played more Ping-Pong.
On May 7, 2003 was the world premiere of the Matrix Reloaded in Los Angeles. My wife Lisa was pregnant at the time. On the way to the premiere in the limo, my wife began having contractions. We thought we might have to turn around and head to the hospital. It turned out to be a false alarm and we went to the premiere. The following day, May 8, 2003 my daughter Bella was born at 8 AM. That was the most amazing thing ever.
Matrix Reloaded came out on May 15, 2003 and dominated the box office world wide. It was a big hit. The movie made film history.
Later that year, Warner Brothers flew me to Zurich, Switzerland for the Swiss premiere of the Matrix Reloaded. It was a honor to be invited for the premiere in my home country.
